Firewatch is Receiving Negative Reviews on Steam Amid PewDiePie Controversy

Over the past few hours, thousands of PewDiePie supporters have invaded the Firewatch Steam page with negative reviews. The overall rating of the game has gone from “Very Positive” to “Mixed”, a major damage to the image of this great independent title developed by a small team.

This is a vengeance by the fans of the well-known YouTuber against Sean Vanaman, co-founder of Studio Campo Santo and author of Firewatch: previously the developer has, in fact, asked YouTube to erase all of the game videos produced by PewDiePie after the YouTuber insulted a player with a racially offensive term during a PUBG livestream.

Right now, Vanaman has not commented on this topic yet.

Felix “PewDiePie” Kjellberg is one of the most influential personalities in the video game world. His troubles began in February 2017, when a Wall Street Journal article highlighted Kjellberg’s obsession with Nazi iconography and anti-Semitic background.

PewDiePie stated at the time that he was not able to understand the reason for the media attacks and accused them of being afraid of his power and interested in using his name to promote articles.

Then, months later, in front of the Charlottesville neo-Nazis event (where a white supremacist killed a participant in the counter-demonstration) PewDiePie published a video in which he apologized, claiming that he did not know at the time that the Nazis really existed and that his jokes would hit people and minorities who are really victims of Nazi propaganda.

Check out the comments of users against Firewatch game on Steam:

“At least one of the game devs seems to be a DMCA abusing SJW crybaby who is using copyright laws to wrongfully take down videos if the reviewer uses a word he doesn’t like.”

“The fact that the creator of this game seriously went after pewdiepie is ♥♥♥♥ing pathetic. Instead of complaining, he should ♥♥♥♥ing fix his game. Worst storyline ever”

“This is one of the most beautiful games. Short, but amazing. Pulls you in and keeps you intrigued from start to finish. However, negative review cause the developer is a whiny baby, filing DMCA takedowns over hurtful words.”

“Some SJW dev. so yeah♥♥♥♥♥”

“The developers seem to support censorship which I will not.”

“Terrible story, too short, and social justice warrior developers. Forgettable game.”
